Shilajit Benefits for Men: What Fulvic Acid Actually Does at the Mitochondrial Level

What shilajit is: real vs fake
Shilajit is a blackish-brown resin that seeps from rock fissures in high-altitude mountain ranges, primarily the Himalayas, Altai, Caucasus, and Andes. It forms over centuries from the decomposition of plant matter and microbial activity under compression and extreme temperature variation. The result is a humic substance dense in fulvic and humic acids, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, and trace minerals.
The relevant active fraction for the mechanisms discussed in the clinical literature is the fulvic acid complex, specifically the dibenzo-alpha-pyrone chromoproteins. This is not a standardized drug with a single active molecule. It is a complex biological material where potency depends entirely on purity and processing.
The fake shilajit problem is significant. Unprocessed or poorly processed shilajit contains heavy metals, fungal spores, free radicals, and other contaminants at levels that exceed safe limits. What you buy in powder form in a foil bag from an unnamed Himalayan source for $15 is not the compound studied in the clinical literature. Purified, standardized extracts -- of which PrimaVie by Natrex is the most studied -- are processed to remove contaminants and standardize the fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrone content.
Andrew Huberman addressed this distinction in Episode 84 of Huberman Lab, noting that the quality variance in shilajit products is extreme and that the studies worth citing used standardized purified forms, not raw resin. Primal Forge uses a purified shilajit extract.
The fulvic acid mechanism at the mitochondrial level
Fulvic acid, the primary bioactive fraction of shilajit, is a low-molecular-weight humic acid that can cross biological membranes. This is the property that makes it interesting at the mitochondrial level: most large molecules cannot enter the mitochondrial matrix. Fulvic acid can.
Inside the mitochondrion, fulvic acid appears to act as an electron shuttle, supporting electron transport chain function and enhancing the efficiency of ATP synthesis. The dibenzo-alpha-pyrone component has been proposed to interact with complex I and complex II of the electron transport chain, reducing electron leak and supporting oxidative phosphorylation efficiency [Carrasco-Gallardo C et al., 2012, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine].
The practical implication: shilajit does not produce more mitochondria (that is the effect you are looking for from endurance training). It may improve the efficiency of existing mitochondria, particularly under conditions of metabolic stress, aging, or nutrient depletion. This is a different mechanism from creatine, which raises the ceiling on rapid ATP replenishment. Shilajit, to the extent the mechanism holds in humans, supports the baseline efficiency of the system that generates ATP over longer timescales.
This makes the compounds complementary rather than redundant. Creatine covers high-intensity output. Shilajit covers mitochondrial baseline. The rationale for stacking them is mechanistically clean.
The CoQ10 bioavailability connection
One of the more specific findings in the shilajit literature is its effect on CoQ10 bioavailability.
Surapaneni DK et al. (2012, Journal of Medicinal Food) found that PrimaVie shilajit at 200mg twice daily significantly enhanced the bioavailability of CoQ10 (ubiquinol form) in healthy male volunteers compared to CoQ10 alone. The proposed mechanism is that fulvic acid chelates CoQ10 and facilitates its transport across the intestinal mucosa and mitochondrial membrane.
CoQ10 is a critical component of the electron transport chain. Supplemental CoQ10 has well-documented poor bioavailability in standard formulations, which limits its clinical utility despite a reasonable theoretical basis. If shilajit enhances CoQ10 absorption by the mechanism proposed in the Surapaneni study, the combination would have more mitochondrial support potential than either compound alone.
The caveat: this is a single study, n=20, manufacturer-adjacent research context. It is an interesting finding that needs replication before drawing strong conclusions. But it is mechanistically coherent and worth factoring into a stacking decision if you are already taking CoQ10 Ubiquinone.
The testosterone data: Pandit 2016
This is where the marketing most often gets ahead of the evidence.
Pandit S et al. (2016, Andrologia, n=96, double-blind, placebo-controlled) gave infertile men 200mg of purified shilajit twice daily for 90 days. Results: statistically significant increases in total testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and sperm count versus placebo. The testosterone increase was approximately 23% from baseline in the treatment group.
Three things to hold in mind when reading that number.
First, the population was infertile men with documented hormonal dysregulation. The hormonal floor in this population is different from a healthy 40-year-old executive with normal baseline testosterone. The effect size in a non-dysregulated population is likely smaller. No trial in healthy eugonadal men has shown a 23% testosterone increase from shilajit.
Second, 23% from a suppressed baseline is not the same as 23% added to a normal level. If you are at 400 ng/dL (low-normal) and gain 23%, you are at 492 ng/dL, still within normal range. If the marketing implication is "shilajit turns normal testosterone into something exceptional," the data does not support that reading.
Third, the trial used PrimaVie-grade purified extract at 400mg/day. Raw resin or underdosed products have no standing to cite this trial's results.
The honest summary: shilajit has credible data for testosterone support in men with hormonal dysregulation, specifically infertility populations. The signal in healthy men is much weaker. Worth including in a performance stack for the mitochondrial mechanism; the testosterone angle is a secondary and modest potential benefit, not the headline.
Dose: 250 to 500mg of purified extract
The clinical studies cluster around 200 to 250mg twice daily (400 to 500mg total daily). Some protocols use a single 500mg dose. The range 250 to 500mg daily of a standardized purified extract is where the evidence base sits.

Timing: shilajit is typically taken with food. The fulvic acid fraction is fat-soluble to a degree; taking with a meal that contains some fat improves absorption. Morning is the most common protocol timing, aligning with energy-support goals.
Duration: the Pandit 2016 trial ran 90 days. The Surapaneni CoQ10 study was shorter. A 60 to 90 day committed protocol before evaluating response is the standard frame, not a two-week test.
Sourcing and heavy metal risk
This is not a footnote. It is a primary purchase criterion.
Unprocessed shilajit collected from high-altitude rock faces accumulates heavy metals from surrounding geology, particularly arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium. A 2012 analysis published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that multiple commercially available "raw" shilajit products contained heavy metals at concentrations above established safety thresholds.
Purification processes, when done correctly, reduce or eliminate these contaminants. PrimaVie undergoes solvent-free purification with tested heavy metal levels. The Certificate of Analysis should show below-limit results for arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium.
Buying shilajit without a supplier-provided, third-party tested CoA is a meaningful risk. This is one category where the cheapest product is actively dangerous, not just suboptimal.
Stacking with creatine: rationale
Creatine Surge and Primal Forge target different parts of the energy system.
Creatine loads the phosphocreatine system, the rapid-burst ATP replenishment pathway dominant during high-intensity effort (1 to 10 seconds peak output). Shilajit's proposed mechanism is mitochondrial efficiency, the aerobic ATP generation pathway that dominates during sustained effort and recovery.
Taking both addresses the two timescales of energy production that a 40+ executive training 3 to 4 times per week actually needs: the acute power output per set (creatine domain) and the between-set and between-session recovery efficiency (mitochondrial domain).
There is no known interaction between creatine and fulvic acid. Take creatine post-workout (or at any consistent daily time). Take shilajit with a fat-containing meal, morning protocol. Who should not take shilajit
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder): shilajit contains bioavailable iron and fulvic acid enhances mineral absorption. In hemochromatosis, adding an iron-enhancing compound could worsen iron accumulation. Contraindicated.
- Sickle cell anemia and thalassemia: same iron-absorption concern applies.
- Gout: shilajit contains purines. If your uric acid levels are already elevated and you are managing gout, additional purine load is relevant to discuss with your physician.
- Immunosuppressant medications post-transplant: the immune-modulating properties proposed for shilajit have not been studied in immunosuppressed populations. Unclear interaction profile.
- Pregnancy and lactation: no safety data. Avoid.
How to measure whether it is working
Shilajit is not a compound that produces an acute perceptible effect in most people. It is not stimulant-based. The signal you are looking for is cumulative and indirect.
After 8 to 12 weeks, compare: perceived energy at the end of training sessions (less drop-off than pre-protocol), HRV trend on your wearable (more stable or improving baseline), and subjective recovery quality between sessions. These are soft signals. The CoQ10 bioavailability data suggests that if you are taking CoQ10 alongside, you may see a larger CoQ10-associated effect than you would from CoQ10 alone.
The only hard measurement is bloodwork. If testosterone is a concern, baseline and post-90-day total testosterone and free testosterone will show whether the hormonal signal is present for your individual biology.

Is raw shilajit resin better than a purified extract?
No. Raw resin may contain heavy metals, fungal contamination, and unstandardized active content. The clinical evidence was generated using purified standardized extracts, not raw resin. Raw resin from an unverified supplier is a contamination risk, not a premium product.
How long until I notice anything from shilajit?
Most reported effects (energy stability, recovery) are cumulative. Do not evaluate before 6 to 8 weeks. Acute stimulant-type effects are not part of the shilajit mechanism.
Does shilajit interact with ashwagandha?
No known pharmacological interaction. They operate via different axes: shilajit via mitochondrial fulvic acid mechanism, ashwagandha via HPA axis modulation.
