Sleep Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Disorder Name: Sleep Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

What is it? Sleep bruxism is a condition where you unconsciously grind, gnash, or clench your teeth during sleep. It's a type of sleep-related movement disorder that can lead to dental damage, jaw pain, and headaches if left untreated. Many people are unaware they do it until a partner hears the grinding or a dentist notices signs of wear.

  • Common Symptoms: Loud teeth grinding or clenching, often heard by a bed partner. Waking up with a dull headache or a sore, tight jaw. Teeth that are flattened, fractured, chipped, or loose. Worn tooth enamel exposes deeper layers of your tooth. Increased tooth pain or sensitivity. Damage from chewing the inside of your cheek.

Potential Solutions: The primary approach is to protect the teeth. Dentists often recommend a custom-fitted mouth guard or splint to wear at night. Addressing the root cause is also crucial, since bruxism is strongly linked to stress and anxiety, stress management techniques like meditation, yoga, or therapy can be very effective. Reducing consumption of stimulants like caffeine and alcohol can also help.

When to see a specialist? You should see a dentist if you have any signs of tooth wear, jaw pain, or if your partner notices you grinding your teeth. A doctor can help explore underlying causes related to stress, anxiety, or other sleep disorders.
